As the Seasons Shift

The backyard flower farm is tired, and to be completely honest with you, I am too.
There's a certain stillness that settles over the backyard flower farm this time of year. The buzzing of the bees quiets. The rows of flowers, once overflowing with color and life, start to fade back into earthy tones. Petals have dropped, stems and stalks have dried and I find myself walking through rows of the season's memories. The seeds sown have multiplied and found their way back to the earth. Fall clean up always feels a little bittersweet. There's satisfaction that comes from clearing out the spent blooms, but also a bit of sadness as we close the chapter of the growing season.
Over the next few weeks, we'll be tilling up the rows to create new growing space for all the blooms to come (including peony roots and specialty tulip bulbs that we'll be planting this fall!) We'll add some compost and then cover the rest of the flower farm's growing space with silage tarp and "tuck it in" for its well-deserved winter nap.
Despite the growing season ending, our business doesn't stop... it simply shifts. During the offseason, I'll be focusing on creating backyard bloom inspired arrangements through our Designer's Choice Series. And soon, I'll begin taking orders for our holiday arrangements and custom creations. My hope is that these backyard bloom inspired designs brighten spaces during the colder months ahead.
And though the days are growing colder, shorter and darker, I'm finding joy in the shift. There's beauty in rest, in preparation, in knowing that the blooms of our backyard flower farm will soon return.
Let this serve as a reminder to you that seasons are meant to shift, that it's ok to slow down, to rest and to re-group.
Love and flowers, always - Aunt Bee
